2011 STEP Awards - For Contractors Who Promote Safety

ABC's Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) Recognizes the efforts of ABC members that strive to achieve effective safety practices at their firms and provides contractors with a tool to objectively evaluate their safety programs, policies, procedures and training. Using a form provided by ABC national, contractors evaluate their programs and receive certificates for qualifying at either the Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum levels. ABC STEP Contractors Build Safer - The Numbers Prove It!

  • 39% INCIDENCE RATE for fewer worker injuries and higher morale.
  • 90% LOWER OSHA CITATION RATE for fewer project delays and out-of-pocket costs.
  • 18% LOWER EMR for savings in workers' compensation premiums.
  • 38% LOWER DART RATE for higher employee productivity and more time on the job.

Figures based on 2007 STEP data compared to 2007 Bureau of Labor Statistics industry averages.  Incidence Rate represents the number of OSHA recordable incidents per 100 employees per year. OSHA Citation Rate represents the number of citations per federal OSHA construction project.  Experience Modification Rate (EMR)(MOD Factor) measures a company's safety performance against similar businesses over the past three years and is one of the factors used to determine workers' compensation rates.  DART Rate represents the number of OSHA recordable incidents that involve "Days Away, Restrictions and Transfers" per 100 employees per year.
