ABC Highlights in 2012: Clear Focus on the Merit Shop Contractor

MN/ND ABC continues to move forward in serving merit shop contractors across Minnesota & North Dakota by remaining focused on our mission to protect and promote competition and free enterprise.  These basic concepts are constantly under attack and need protection, if we are to grow and prosper in the future.  Below are a few highlights that have kept us true to our beliefs through the year:

Membership Department:

•    Our Fargo, North Dakota office, under the advisement of the North Dakota council has grown from 23 members in February of 2009, to more than 60 members at the end of this year!
•    Received the prestigious Mullan Award for growing our chapter, and having the highest retention rate in the region and one of the highest in the nation!  ABC's membership department added 75 new members in 2010.
•    Set a record in Minnesota for the most new members recruited in history in 2010.

Government Affairs:

•    Raised over $49,000 for local and state races and had an 85% success rate in candidates that we supported, which was our highest success rate in our association's history.
•    Developed a prevailing wage guide book for use by our members.  This is a merit-shop guide so our members know about department procedures, legal rulings, and statutory guidance in one package to keep our members clean and find bidding advantages on prevailing wage jobs.
•    Drove the message on proposed worker classification rules of prevailing wage by dominating the MN Department of Labor's hearing.  ABC members spoke on a variety of issues that would unfairly classify workers according to a union model, while excluding open shop work roles.
•    Put up votes, and blocked numerous bills that would negatively affect our members including mandatory apprenticeship rules for state funded work, independent contractor considerations, and many others.

Education and Safety:
•    Construction Education Foundation (CEF), ABC’s training arm, had the only association approved apprenticeship program in the state.
•    ABC offered a myriad of continuing education and prep classes to satisfy most licensing needs.
•    ABC continued to grow its partnership with MN OSHA to improve safety on the job-site.
•    ABC's Safety Day brought together over 100 people from around the state to make their next year a safer one.

ABC’s Business Development & Networking
•    Hosted five “Meet the General” events throughout the Minnesota and North Dakota, allowing opportunities for member-to-member business relationships to be established.

•    Hosted four "Meet the General Summer Sessions" events throughout the state.  Allowing our members to meet some of the state's largest contractors for a complimentary lunch.

•    Held Annual Meeting and Excellence in Construction banquets to celebrate our members’ successes.
•    Distributed two different membership directories and fielded calls daily on members searching for other members.
•    Engaged members in fun events including our Red Lake Ice Fishing Tournament Weekend, Terry Korthoff Sporting Clays Shoot and Golf Tournaments.

Affinity Programs to save members money:
•    Your ABC membership can pay for itself with our national partnerships with General Motors and Ford!  For example, you can save an additional $2000 on top of all available incentives for each GM Cargo van that you purchase in 2012-13 with a valid ABC membership.
•    Members can save 10 cents/gallon for the first three months of belonging to Superfleet's or Holiday's exclusive ABC gas program partnership.
